With the increase in cases of online fraud in India, it has come to light that women and teenagers have been the biggest target of cyber fraudsters. According to the latest report of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), out of the total cyber fraud cases, there were 28 lakh 74 thousand victims, which included women and youth.
Officials say most cases start by creating fake profiles on social media. Scams befriend people by pretending to be friendly, then connect with them under the pretext of “sending gifts” or “gifts.” After this, they may be asked for money or threatened to make private photos or videos public. In this way they create emotional pressure and blackmail the victims.
In many cases, cybercriminals trap teenagers by luring them with a “game,” “job,” or “loan.” Some now adopt new methods—like hacking WhatsApp, scanning QR codes, screen sharing, or creating fear like “digital arrest.”
According to digital experts, cyber fraud is no longer just theft of money—it is an attack on people's personal lives and mental peace. The motive of fraudsters is not only money, but they also exploit fear, greed, and personal information. Complaints of cyber fraud are increasing in India, so now common people also need to be cautious online.
If any unknown person follows you or someone you know on social media or a messaging app or talks about becoming friends, then definitely investigate. Anytime:
If you receive any kind of threat or blackmail, immediately complain to your nearest cyber cell or helpline 1930. Government and cybersecurity experts are saying that the faster people are connected online, the more caution is necessary.
Statistics show that cybercrime is no longer just a men's or age-group issue—women and youth are now particularly targeted. Therefore, we have to be extremely cautious while using social media and the internet. The biggest weapon to avoid the tricks of fraudsters is awareness, vigilance, and correct information. If we are even a little careful, we can make the online world safer.
